RSA Course Details

If you are looking for work in any establishment that sells or serves alcohol in NSW, it is a government requirement for you to have completed a Liquor and Gaming NSW approved RSA course (Responsible Service of Alcohol).

Want to complete the RSA & RCG Course in 1 Day? Enrol into the RSA & RCG Course.

During this RSA program, you will learn the knowledge and skill associated with the responsible service of alcohol (RSA), which is ideal for bar staff, licensees, managers, security officers and event/function staff.

The RSA course will include information about:

  • Legal requirements related to venues, minors and signage
  • Assisting customers to drink within the appropriate limits
  • How to assess alcohol affected customers and identify those whose service should be refused
  • When to refuse service of alcohol
  • Standard drinks
  • Harm minimisation strategies and procedures

We offer a fun and informative one day course that will provide you with the knowledge and skills to obtain a NSW RSA certificate, allowing you to apply for your RSA photo card. We offer the RSA frequently, so it is easy to fit the RSA course into your schedule.

Legislation requires refresher training every five (5) years for NSW. You can renew your photo competency card with Liquor and Gaming NSW directly in the last 90 days before your current card expires by completing the online refresher training.

Liquor & Gaming will notify you when your card is about to expire. For information on renewals, see

Training Program

  • All students must have valid photo ID on the day of training.
  • Training must be conducted over a minimum period of 6 hours not including breaks.
  • A Liquor and Gaming Interim Certificate will be issued to students if they satisfactorily complete all assessments, demonstrating competency in the program via email.
  • Due to RSA being a Government Initiative, students will have to complete ALL training hours required. Insufficient ID and being over 10 minutes late (including from lunch breaks) will automatically deem the student ineligible to start the course on that date. Students will need to contact our office to rebook and process any relevant rescheduling fee in line with our policy.

RSA Assessment

Within the 6 hours of the accredited course, students will be required to complete multiple choice questions, short answer questions and a verbal assessment in English throughout the day. Students will receive lunch breaks which is not included in the 6 hours and please note, lunch is not provided. Students are offered multiple opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills throughout the course to deem them competent across the unit.

There are 3 components to this RSA program:

  • Theoretical training in the classroom (Multiple Choice & Short Answer)
  • Practical training in the classroom (Verbal Roleplay)
  • Assessment for both knowledge and skills

This RSA course combines plain English, videos, photos, and questioning to ensure all learners can have the best possible chance at comprehending the required knowledge and skills.

Assessments MUST be completed in English and with no further assistance. If you believe you will need assistance due to your Language, Literacy or Numeracy skills, please contact our office on 02 9232 1010 to discuss your training needs.

If a student is not successful in completing all assessments satisfactorily, they will need to rebook the RSA course at a $50 NYC Fee.

RSA Certification

Once student is deemed competent, they will be issued a SOA (Statement of Attainment) within 24 hours of the training (may take longer on weekends)

Students will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for:

  • SITHFAB021 Provide responsible service of alcohol (formerly SITHFAB201)

Student will also be provided with an Interim RSA certificate issued by Liquor and Gaming NSW within 24 hours of their completed course. Please note, weekends may take longer than 24 hours. This can be used to commence work and is valid for 90 days. After 90 days, an RSA competency card must be presented to work in any licenced premise. These are only valid in NSW.

To obtain the RSA competency card, the Interim RSA certificate is to be taken to a registered Service NSW office to apply:

For any lost, stolen or replacement RSA Cards, please contact Liquor and Gaming on 1300 024 720.

Do you learn how to make cocktails?

Unfortunately not, the RSA course is a theoretical course with practical role play involved. You will not handle alcohol in the course. At your place of work, they will be able to train you in making drinks. Different places, generally have different ways of pour drinks etc and will be able to show you. You will be required to have your RSA however.

What do I do if my interim certificate expired?

If your interim certificate expired, you can no longer work using that certificate. You can still take it to Service NSW to get the competency card. If you complete the training again after the 90 days expiry, you cannot receive a new interim certificate.

How long does it take to get my Certificate?

If the course is taken online, you can download your Certificate of Attainment instantly upon completion of the course. This is for the following states:

  • Northern Territory
  • Queensland
  • South Australia
  • Western Australia

If your RSA is for New South Wales, you will receive the following:

  • RSA National Statement of Attainment - upon completion
  • NSW OLGR Interim Certificate - upon completion
  • RSA Competency Photo Card - collect at Australia Post
Can I still work while I am waiting for my Competency card?

You can work once you have received your interim certificate for 90 days.

Does this include Gambling?

No it doesn’t, this course is only the RSA - Provide responsible service of alcohol. We do offer the RCG - Provide responsible conduct of gambling as another course or even as a same day course. The courses do cover separate topics and are required by law to be six (6) hours long excluding break.

Do other states recognise NSW RSA?

Currently RSA trained in NSW is recognised in most other states of Australia using a digital Statement of Attainment. We do offer a card upgrade that you can purchase to receive a much more durable and accessible plastic card.

General Course FAQs

When is my booking confirmed?

Your booking is confirmed once we receive full payment of course fees. Unfortunately there are rare occasions where the course will sell out prior to you finalising payment.  In this situation a member of our customer service team will get in contact to organise an alternate training date.

What are your payment methods?

Payment can be made at the time of booking using either a credit card, EFTPOS or cash. Invoices and acceptance of company cheques is by prior arrangement only.

Can I pay my package in installments?

What if I have trouble with written/spoken english?

Most courses will permit a student to bring a friend to interpret for them during training. If you do need assistance, we ask that you contact first before booking your course so we can advise if there are any restrictions. For example, Forklift training requires students to complete all assessments in English.

If the course permits, you may bring a friend along to the course or, alternatively, you can phone the National Translation service to book an interpreter. Visit the Immigration website for more information about help with translating.
