How to respond in an emergency? Your awareness guide to being safe

Fires can spread quickly & knowing how to respond efficiently in these situations is essential for protecting yourself and others.   1. Know the Evacuation Plan: It is important to familiarise yourself with the building that you work, learn or play ins evacuation plan. Within these plans, they identify evacuation routes, meeting points, fire alarms and exits. It is important to know all these routes, pints and alarms to ensure your safety.
  2. Staying Calm & Assessing the situation: during an emergency, it is natural to panic, however staying calm and assessing the dangers around you can ensure your safety. By alerting others, checking doors and signs of smoke it can help prevent any further risk to yourself and others.
  3. Evacuation of the Building: Once everything is deemed safe you can start to evacuate. By following the evacuation plan, moving quickly but not rushing and helping those who need assistance, it will encourage safety. By staying low to the ground, it will minimise your risk of inhaling toxic fumes 
  4. Once you have made it to the Assembly Area: Once everyone has gathered in the designated safety area, ensure that fire services have been called given all the information necessary to ensure safety. Remain at the assembly area until emergency services have declared the building safe. 
  5. Review: Once the emergency has been handled it is productive to review the incident, how did the evacuation go? And to provide support to those distressed or injured.

By knowing the evacuation plan, reacting promptly to alarms, staying calm, and assisting others, you can greatly improve your chances of escaping safely. Regular fire drills, clear communication, and a level-headed approach are essential when dealing with a fire emergency.
