Understanding DRSABC: The First Aid Response That Saves Lives

In an emergency, every second counts. Knowing what to do before professional help arrives can be the difference between life and death. That’s where DRSABC comes in—a simple and effective acronym used in first aid to guide you through the essential steps of responding to an emergency.

Whether you’re in the workplace, at home, or out in the community, understanding DRSABC can empower you to act quickly and confidently.

What Does DRSABC Stand For?

DRSABC is a step-by-step action plan to assess and manage a situation where someone is injured or unresponsive:

  • D – Danger: Check for any dangers to yourself, the victim, or others (e.g. electrical wires, traffic, fire). Never put yourself at risk.
  • R – Response: Check if the person is responsive. Gently shake their shoulders and ask loudly, “Can you hear me?” or “Are you OK?”
  • S – Send for Help: If there is no response, call 000 (or the emergency number in your country) immediately, or ask someone nearby to do so.
  • A – Airway: Check that the person’s airway is clear. If not, carefully open their mouth and remove any obstructions.
  • B – Breathing: Look, listen, and feel for breathing for up to 10 seconds. If they are not breathing normally, be prepared to start CPR.
  • C – CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation): Begin chest compressions and rescue breaths at a ratio of 30:2 if trained, or continuous compressions if not confident with breaths. Continue until help arrives or the person recovers.

Why Is DRSABC Important?

In many emergencies—such as cardiac arrest, choking, or severe trauma—taking immediate action using the DRSABC method can buy critical time until paramedics arrive. It provides a structured approach so even non-medical people can act without hesitation or confusion.
